About The Event

Ara Manawa is a team at the Auckland DHB, championing the needs of users in the design of new spaces, services, experiences and products. There is a saying, that Ara Manawa's role is to turn Auckland DHB inside out. To shine light on the complex challenges design can help solve, to work with a broad range of staff, clinicians and universities in the solving, and to use human centred approaches that spark moments of joy in the often tough journeys of patients and whānau. Hospitals are above all about people, and they recognise their privilege in journeying alongside the community through their work.

We’d love to invite you in, show you a little of what we do, and impart some of our learning and tools.

This seminar will explore:

  • Ara Manawa, the positioning of a design lab within Auckland City hospital
  • A case study of the whānau room rejuvenation project
  • Upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations – what this can look like, in a space that historically has not done it well

You’ll take away:

  • An appreciation of the vastness of our health system, with insight into what it takes to create change
  • A Te Tiriti o Waitangi Framework – a reflective tool to understand how your project may be aligned with NZ’s bicultural treaty obligations

Who should attend:

  • Anyone curious about designing in the health system
  • Designers of every genre, we are a multidisciplinary design lab
